EXPLORING IPHONEOGRAPHY

This summer I took an iphoneography class from http://www.bigpictureclasses.com one of my favorite online education sites. My kids didn’t understand why I would take pictures with my phone when I had my nice DSLR that I use every day anyway. I couldn’t explain it either, except I wanted to see why so many people love using their phones as their main camera. Nearly half of all camera users claim there cell phone is what they use as their camera. Here is my take on the good and the bad of my iphone camera.

First The Bad:

1. No control, there are a few apps that offer some depth of field and exposure features but the ease of using your camera phone is taken away.

2. Really poor in low light, and most sporting events unless they are in the middle of the day.

3. Relying on all of the amazing apps. I want my photo to be good to begin with and to use the apps for enhancement or to complete a vision.

To really see the difference I took these images of a rose in the exact same lighting scenario.

The Good:

1. Quick and easy, no lens changes to think about (although there are a few if you want to use them). One of the most popular is http://www.olloclip.com

It’s the easiest way to share photos to a social media site with one tap. My favorite is http://instagram.com

All of the amazing apps! The ones that I use the most frequently are:

Camera + It’s available thru the i-tunes app store for .99. I use this in place of my native camera phone for all of my pictures.

Rhonna Designs-incredible graphics and overlays to spice up any photo. Also available in the app store.

Squareready to post to Instagram ready to crop.

I used all 3 apps in this image-

What I really learned from all of this was that if you have an idea it doesn’t matter what camera you use, and taking a break from one camera to use another can open up some new ways of thinking.
